Cataract Treatment in Chicago, IL
Cataract Management at Big City Optical
Big City Optical diagnoses and monitors cataracts, helps patients manage vision changes as cataracts progress, and co-manages cataract surgery with Chicago ophthalmologists. Our optometrists evaluate how cataracts are affecting your vision and daily life, monitor changes over time, and coordinate pre- and post-operative care when you are referred for surgery.
What Are Cataracts?
A cataract is clouding of the eye’s natural lens. Cataracts usually develop gradually and become more common with age.
As the lens becomes cloudier, less light reaches the retina clearly. This can make vision look blurred, dim, hazy, or less colorful. Cataracts may also increase glare and make night driving more difficult.
Early cataracts do not always require surgery. Our Chicago eye doctors can monitor them and help determine when changes in glasses, lighting, or other everyday adjustments are enough and when a surgical consultation may be appropriate.
What Are the Symptoms of Cataracts?
Cataracts can affect vision differently from person to person. Common symptoms may include:
- Blurry or cloudy vision
- Difficulty seeing at night
- Increased glare or light sensitivity
- Halos around lights
- Colors appearing dull or yellowed
- Frequent changes in your glasses prescription
- Double vision in one eye
- Needing brighter light for reading or close work
These symptoms can also occur with other eye conditions. An eye exam is needed to determine whether cataracts are the cause.
How Does Big City Optical Diagnose Cataracts?
Big City Optical evaluates cataracts as part of a comprehensive assessment of your vision and eye health. Your optometrist checks the clarity of your natural lens, assesses your vision, and considers how any changes affect everyday activities such as reading, working, or driving.
Potential tests we conduct include:
- Visual acuity testing
- Refraction to measure changes in prescription
- Slit-lamp examination
- Dilated eye examination
- Retinal imaging
- Optical coherence tomography, or OCT, when clinically appropriate
- Glare or contrast testing, if used
Different tests answer different questions. Some help confirm that a cataract is present, while others help your doctor determine whether another eye condition could also be contributing to changes in your sight.
How Are Cataracts Managed?
Cataract care depends on how much the lens clouding affects your vision and daily activities.
In earlier stages, an updated eyeglass prescription, improved lighting, or other practical changes may help you see more comfortably. Big City Optical can continue to monitor the cataract during regular eye examinations and compare changes over time.
At Big City Optical, our optometrist:
- Monitor cataract progression
- Update glasses prescriptions
- Managing visual changes before surgery
- Pre-operative cataract evaluations
- Referral to an ophthalmologist or cataract surgeon
- Cataract surgery co-management
- Post-operative follow-up examinations
- Monitoring healing and vision after surgery
- Updating glasses after surgery when appropriate
When Is Cataract Surgery Recommended?
Cataract surgery is generally considered when the cataract begins to interfere meaningfully with vision or everyday activities and simpler measures no longer provide enough improvement.
No single visual-acuity number determines the right time for every patient. Your eye doctor considers how well you see as well as how cataracts affect activities that matter to you, such as:
- Driving safely, especially at night
- Reading
- Working
- Seeing faces clearly
- Managing glare
- Performing hobbies or detailed tasks
The decision to have surgery is made after discussing your symptoms, examination findings, visual needs, and surgical options.
What Happens During Cataract Co-Management?
Cataract co-management allows your Big City Optical optometrist and cataract surgeon to coordinate different parts of your care.
Before Surgery
Your optometrist can evaluate your vision, monitor your cataract, discuss how it affects your daily life, and refer you to a cataract surgeon when surgery is appropriate.
At the Surgical Practice
The ophthalmologist confirms surgical candidacy, discusses the procedure and available intraocular lens options, and performs the cataract surgery.
After Surgery
Big City Optical may provide part of your post-operative follow-up care in coordination with the surgeon.
Follow-up may include monitoring healing, checking vision, evaluating the eye for complications, and updating your glasses prescription once your vision has stabilized.
Cataract Care Across Chicago
Big City Optical provides cataract diagnosis, monitoring, and surgical co-management as part of its broader medical eye care services across the Chicago area.
If your vision has become cloudy, dim, or increasingly affected by glare, an eye exam can help determine whether cataracts or another eye condition may be responsible.
